Peng from the University of Texas. This post will summarize interesting facts about our global economy. Those facts are using data from 2008 and 2007.

Fact 1: The global economic pyramid is a classification of the world population by annual income level . The top tier represents approximately 1 billion with a GDP per capita superior to USD 20,000. The second tier is also 1 billion persons with a GDP per capita between USD 2,000 and USD 20,000. The last tier (base of the pyramid) represents 4 billion people with a GDP per capita less than USD 2,000 per year. The base of the pyramid represents the vast majority of the humanity with an income level of less than USD 167 per month to survive.

My question about the fact 1: How can we distribute the world income in way that everybody gets enough resources to survive and lead an healthy life?

Fact 2: The top economies of the world are United States, Japan, Germany, China, United Kingdom, France, and Italy. By far, United States is leading with an annual GDP of USD 13,201,819. The top companies of the world are Wal-Mart Stores, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, and BP. The annual revenue of Wall-Mart Stores is bigger than the annual GDP of Poland, Austria, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, etc... If we compile a global ranking of countries and companies, Wall-Mart Stores is ranked 22 just after Indonesia.

My question about fact 2: Viewing that Multi-National Enterprises are becoming as powerful as countries, what should be their role in the development of the world?

Fact 3: The top 3 leading merchandise exporters are Germany, United States, and China while the top 3 service exporters are United States, United Kingdom, and Germany. The top 4 merchandise and service importers are United States, Germany, China, and United Kingdom. One of the most resourceful continent in the world is Africa but none of the African nations is in the top 10 ranking of exports and imports. In 2008, the amount of subsidies received by farmers in the European Unions represented 1/3 of the annual income of all the sub-Saharian countries combined.

My question about fact 3: How can we keep trading without jeopardizing the competitiveness of poor and resourceful economies as a way to develop them?

Fact 4: The average hourly wage (in USD) of a factory worker in Germany is 19.80 and 0.43 in India. Even if the national purchasing power may be the same, the international purchasing power of both workers is totally unequal. The price of a Big Mac is 55% less in Hong Kong than in United States.

My question about fact 4: How can we balance international purchasing power across countries in order to have the same opportunities?

I hope that all those questions will be solved in the next decades so we can all benefits from globalization, development, opportunities, and freedom.

Ask what you can do

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country".
John F. As today, MNEs have operations in most of the countries in the world and some of them can be compared to countries in term of GDP-Annual Revenues. In the developing world, a wave of privatization has open new markets for them. Most of these markets have been gained thanks to their competitiveness and efficiency. Due to their preponderant role in the globalization, some MNEs have now established programs to develop communities in the developing world by investing in infrastructures and social projects.

So this is very interesting: As today, MNEs have substituted public companies in the developing world because of their competitiveness but they have also elaborate complex programs to tackle global issues through their CSR program. They have indeed contributed in the mission of international agencies such as The World Bank, or UNDP. They will never substitute those agencies since they are funded by governments from rich countries (G20).

But still, the main purpose of an MNE is to maximize their profits in order to satisfy the interest of their shareholders. They are running Corpoarte Social Responsibility Programs because if they don't they will be perceived negatively by their customers, and so loose profit and market share.

So here come my equation of competitiveness and economic development: Can an International Social Enterprise (ISE) be more competitive than an MNE? An International Social Enterprise is a social venture that has operations in more than one country. If it is the case, then an ISE could be able to pursue their interests on a global level:

- maximize profits

- impact positively the poorest and weakest

As today, I haven't found the business model that will allow competitiveness and economic development (social progress). Indeed, if an ISE use the same structure than an MNE then an ISE won't be as competitive as an MNE. Why? An MNE is distributing its profit into two channels: a percentage for their shareholders (investors), and another percentage is reallocated to grow their operations. An ISE would have to distribute its profits into three channels: shareholders, reinjection into operations, and the society to achieve direct and positive impact on the poorest and weakest.

The only solution for an ISE to reach competitiveness and social impact (economic development) is to synergize the social impact with business model. As far as I know, no ISE exists today. Just some social ventures successful at the national level (E.J Grameen Bank in Bangladesh).

Summary on ISE and MNE:

1. An MNE pursues only profit and uses CSR programs as a marketing and ethical tool.

2. An ISE pursues profit and social impact.

Always remember

"Remember, always give your best. Let me share some thoughts about this 3 big adjectives.

- Unequal: The GDP per capita (PPP) can be used to provide proof of an unequal world. It represents the Gross Domestic Product divided by the population of one country and adjusted with the price differences. It can also be defined as the income adjusted of inflation that a resident gets within one year period. According to the 2009 estimates of the International Monetary Fund, the GDP per capita (PPP) of the first country was $87,717 and the one of the last country was $334. Even if some factors are artificially increasing the gap between these two countries that are making difficult any comparisons such as the size of the shadow economy, the type of economic activities, and the compound effect of the GDP over the years, the difference in income per capita is substantial.

- Unstable: To show that the world is unstable, the information about conflicts can be used. According to the Heidelberger Institut, 7 wars and 24 severe crisis took place in 2009. A conflict is considered to be a severe crisis if violent force is repeatedly used in an organized way. A war is a type of violent conflict in which violent force is used with a certain continuity in an organized and systematic way. The conflict parties exercise extensive measures, depending on the situation. The extent of destruction is massive and of long duration.

- Unsustainable: Unsustainable can define as a the behavior of one generation impacting negatively (economy, health, environment) future generations. Because the world population is projected to rise from today's 6.8 billion to 9.15 billion in 2050, the transition into high consumption behaviors of booming economies (India, China, Brazil, Russia), and the over-consumption attitudes of developed economies, the world's ecological capacity is simply insufficient to satisfy all the aspirations in a sustainable way.

So, now what?

Together

Bob Sinclar - Together from cruznik on Vimeo.

In music, we can tell stories

Can we tell stories and experiences in music? Today in 2009, even if we improved in comparison to the previous decades, we still don't know or want to change what need to be changed. 28 conflicts are taking place in the world. 1 person out of five is poor. 2.5 billions people don't have access to proper sanitation facilities. We are consuming Earth. Diseases such as malaria, HIV, cancer still kill people; not to mention issues related to education, development, women, agriculture, debt, trade and investment, children, governance. In conclusion, we are facing a list of global issues and we are 6.8 billions people with the potential to address them.

Now, that we all know the 2 variables: list of global issues and people living on earth, I will present the classification theory. Human beings can be classified in 3 categories according their behaviors and impacts on world challenges.
-NOT SURVIVING: this category is composed by persons who cannot survive because of existing external factors who prevent them to do so. These people cannot fulfill entirely the first or second level in Maslow's hierarchy of needs and have a life expectancy very limited.
-SURVIVING: thanks to human progress and globalization, this category represents people that are able to survive on Earth. The number of persons who belong to this category is huge. A majority of them lives in industrialized and emerging countries. They live in individualist-focused society where everybody must work to get a wage and so consume what they need and what they perceived to need. Even if they can survive, they are unfortunately not helping the first category to survive.
- HELPING: this category is composed by a small number of human beings who seek the need to address world issues and so help people who belong to the first category. They are AID workers, some government people, philanthropist, social entrepreneurs, and others. They can impact the world in a recommended active or a passive way.

After analyzing the classification theory, I personally think that the third category should of course focus on the first category which mean helping to solve global issues, but also make people from the second category jump into the third one. Please don't look this post as a criticism of the human being, but as a reflection on how we could be categorized using certain specific criteria.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 204px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_b15CS5t68iw/SuPBLWWfWMI/AAAAAAAAAF0/kkK-ZXo0qKU/s400/clasification+theory.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396369179242617026" />

Extraordinary tools

Have you ever looking for something extraordinary that you cannot find on Internet. Human-beings who are in this state cannot even access to food, water, shelter, sanitation, and health care. Actually, more than 1 person out of six live in extreme poverty conditions (1.4 billion people). Economically speaking, it means living with less than 1.08 USD per day (international poverty line).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 185px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_b15CS5t68iw/SrNDlXxXqDI/AAAAAAAAAFc/1PxdNySMhZI/s400/extreme+poverty+repartition.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382720288953182258" />
This picture shows us the percentage per country of people living with less than a dollar a day in 2007-2008. What can we conclude. Can we see poverty clusters? Of course yes, the two main clusters are Africa and South-Est of Asia.
Now let's do an exercise:
- Thinking in this poverty repartition of the world, every times you are using a dollar ask you: Do I really NEED it?
- Every time you are complaining about something ak you: Do they complain? Do I know what pain is?
Well,to clarify the first question, we live in a world where the money emission and repartition is controlled by our behaviors. If you win money (consumption vouchers), someone is loosing it. What if you and me could lower our consumption level and so save money in order to give it to people you really NEED it.
To enlighten the second interrogation, I think that it is ok to complain because it is a component of our nature. But we have to carry and respect each other in an empathic way. I should complain because I will fall asleep hungry tonight, but I cannot complain because my Ipod is not working.

So what do we want to do with this problem. Do we want our next generations to learn at school that in the 21th century (Christian calendar), we allowed 1 person out of six to live in inhuman conditions when we could have helped them with a couple of simple behaviors: saving, giving, respect and maybe commit yourself to make the world a better place.

6th level in Maslow's hierarchy of needs

Everyone knows that the Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory which generalizes the needs of the human-beings by order of importance. We used to study this basic concept in Marketing to understand consumer's behaviors, but it can be also studied in philosophy, psychology, sociology, human resources, etc...

To refresh our brain, let's comment the pyramidal interpretation of the Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

Well, as you can see, it exits 5 levels classified in order of importance from the bottom to the top of the pyramid by the human-being. If the needs of the first level are not satisfied, a person won't focus on the needs of the second level.
- 1st level: Physiological: basics needs of human-being in order to survive
- 2nd level: Safety: feeling safe in his environment
- 3rd level: Love/belonging: having a social life into a group of person
- 4th level: Esteem: feeling respected and respect others
- 5th level: Self-actualization: having his potential maximized

At the end of his life, Abraham Maslow revealed the existence of a 6th level in the hierarchy of needs called "self-transcendence". The "self-transcendence" level is connection beyond the ego of the person. It is the satisfaction of helping others self-fulfilled their potential. Maslow writes that only 2% of the human-being will ever reached that level.

Anyway, I am so optimistic about this level. It is a true demonstration that at least the nature of the human-being is fundamentally good because its last needs is to help the other to fulfill its potential. This theory of the motivation undermines strongly the quotes of Hobbes :"man is a wolf to man".

A strategical approach to solve world challenges

The Copenhagen Consensus presents an exhaustive classification of the world issues done by the best economists of the world. More than just listing these problems, it proposes a priorization of the solution to the problems according to our resources.
Indeed, a very good approach is to recognize that we cannot solve all the problems in the world because we don't have the funds and the people to execute the solution. Using this argument, a priorization is necessary to focus on the most efficient solution in term of positive impact, time, and resources.
That's what Bjorn Lombor, Danish political scientist and director of the Copenhagen Consensus Center, is going to explain us in this video.

The priorization 2008 was done by:
- Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia University;
- François Bourguignon, Paris School of Economics and former World Bank chief economist;
- Finn E. On moment Leadership.
Ummmm...

For me it is something very useful and interesting. I discover this concept after a self-reflection on a failure that I had in my life. I can describe the on moment leadership concept as a behavior to adopt that we need to use when confronted to an unplanned situation that requires fast decision-taking and urgent improvisation.

During this kind of situation, it is very easy doing nothing instead of acting. Because act means not know what will happen and be on a risk period, I think that a lot of person just stay paralyzed.

Things to remember that should be part of our behavior when confronted to this kind of uncomfortable situation:
- the status quo is more dangerous than the unknown
- it is our only and last opportunity
- even if it's an unplanned situation, no matter if we are prepared or not because generally we won't be prepared and nobody will be
- be confident and don't be ashamed to confront the situation
- if we are afraid, it is a good indicator because we have right now the opportunity to break this fear down

Who?....................me

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 144px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_b15CS5t68iw/ShB1-3h3TbI/AAAAAAAAAEU/lgPsB8RjaNI/s200/lem.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5336895281352363442" />
Analyzing blogs on Internet, I have come to a crucial conclusion: it exists 2 kinds of blog, one just describes some topics since the other focuses on the life of its writer. Since I write on this blog, I have never presented myself.

Such an Introduction to find a reason to talk about me, finally!!!!!

I was born in France in 1985 in a city named Talence closed to Bordeaux which is located at the south west of France. My father's name is Jean-Pierre and my mother's name is Regine. I have 1 brother and 1 sister. All my childhood was made of football, happiness, & lemonade. All my high school's life was so normal.

I begin to study Logistics at the university of my town which allows me to do the ERASMUS program in Spain & then in Scotland. Thanks to that two learning and impactfull experiences, I begin to design what I really wanted to study. That's why, I decide to go in a french business school which permits me to study in Chile.During my learning travel in Chile, I took a really good decision. I join AIESEC. AIESEC has one official definition and lot of personal definitions. I will use mine: AIESEC is an experience that allows young people to discover that they can achieve their dreams planning their own development.

Thanks to AIESEC, everyday I develop myself and I am closer to my vision.
I am an AIESECer.

What matters to me

I find that video in an other blog. Indeed, out of 10 projects, only one will generate sustainable incomes in order for the new company to survive.

However some people can interpret this data in a negative way, I think that failures are necessary and healthy. Indeed, it is during the failure that some people can challenge again and again in order to win. More times someone will fail more his success will be huge and consistent.

But be careful, some people are not so prepared to fail. This kind of frustration in front of the defeat is much more harder to overcome. That's why when challenging you, please try to be prepared for the failure visualizing all the different alternatives.

To conclude, everyone should challenge himself with the condition to be shaped in order to overcome the possible failures.

The Balanced dream

The balanced dream can be explained viewing the world as a boat on the ocean. If the boat is enough balanced then it is possible for the captain to navigate until his objective: the land. If the boat is not enough balanced then the more realistic scenario is that the boat will sink with its captain inside. Let's analyze the world as a boat!
Is the world balanced today?
Some examples:
- In the Asian, African and Latin American countries, over 500 million people are living in what the World Bank has called "absolute poverty".
- Every year 15 million children die of hunger.
- Every 3.6 seconds someone dies of hunger
- Nearly one in four people, 1.3 billion - a majority of humanity - live on less than $1 per day, while the world's 358 billionaires have assets exceeding the combined annual incomes of countries with 45 percent of the world's people. UNICEF
- Approximately 250,000 children under the age of 18 are thought to be fighting in conflicts around the world.
What items should be balanced in that world?
money, wages, food, water, health, energy, sustainability, peace and war, freedom, power, prices, houses and flat, natural resources, education.
How this world could be balanced?
Each items can actually be balanced trough capital's repartition & money. For example, to satisfy the world's sanitation and food requirements would cost only US$13 billion- what the people of the United States and the European Union spend on perfume each year. So we should definitely begin to share our capital & money with people who don't have the ability right now to generate resources. A lot of solutions exist: social entrepreneurship, loans, education, shift in our mindsets and in the political and business leader perception of capitalism.

State of peace 2008

The idea of a global peace index was firstly conceived by Steve Killelea, a philanthropist entrepreneur. It was implemented by the university of Sydney in order to show the peacefulness rating of each country in the world.
What we should understand with the components of the rating is that it encompasses the absence of war in the boundaries of the country being rated, and the institutions and cultural behaviors in the country that seeks to maintain peace in the world.
The ranking shows some interesting data. Indeed, the country with the highest rating is Iceland. The top 10 are Iceland, Denmark, Norway, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg, and Austria. Just for you to know, the members of G8, an informal forum where political leaders discuss about world issues such as energy, global warming, starving, and war, are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States. As you can read, only one country in the G8 membership, Japan, is in the top 10 of the global peace index. The countries with the lowest rating are Russia, Lebanon, North Korea, Central African Republic, Chad, Israel, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia and Iraq. As you can notice, Russia is both member of the G8 and one of the lowest rating in the global peace index.
We can conclude that the comparison between the global peace index and the G8's membership shows us some paradoxes. These paradoxes can be explain by the fact that to be a member of G8 you need to have economical influence but not peace. That's why, soon the G8 will become the G14 with Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, and Egypt as members. All these countries are in process of acceptation.

The fundamental state of leadership

Leaders are at the top of their actions when they act from their values and profounds instincts called the fundamental state of leadership.
During his researches, Robert E. Quinn found out that these actions can be reached after a personal and challenging crisis like a grave illness, a big financial loss, friend's death, etc...
But it's possible to reach the fundamental state of leadership through a personal internal work:
step 1: Admit that you was at least once in your life in the fundamental state of leadership and analyze how you were acting.
So, you have to remember yourself during this big challenge and analyze how you was acting during this experience.
step 2: Analyze how you are acting in a normal state.

These 2 steps must provide you an interesting feedback. Once you can benchmark the 2 situations (challenging one vs normal one), you just need to remember that in a normal state or situation, your behavior must be transformed into to the one you previously reached during a crisis' situation.

The picture summarize the step 1 and step 2 you need to analyze.
Good Luck!!

Yes We Can

no comments.

How small we are, but how big we can become.

As you can see in the video about planets' sizes, we live in a huge universe. Commitment is doing it.
True Commitment is not conditional, for to be committed means to be absolutely committed.

Commitment is more than doing just what is convenient or comfortable.
Commitment is doing what is necessary. Commitment is making the sacrifices
and the tradeoffs that are required to uphold it. Commitment is more than
just wishing for the right conditions. Commitment is working with what you
have.

Commitment is not easy. Commitment does not back down or run away at the
first sign of trouble. Commitment perseveres until the goal is reached.
Commitment does not waste time and effort whining or complaining or seeking
to find blame. Commitment adjusts to reality and moves forward.

Too many people have been deceived for too long, and have come to expect
that they can know fulfillment without the gritty effort of commitment. They
are sadly mistaken. Real, solid commitment is real work. And well worth it.
The evidence is overwhelming -- it gets results like nothing else can.

"Our dream need to be achieved. Our dream is our life. Don't waste it."
No excuses, never give up, just commitment.

Our world

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_b15CS5t68iw/SPOePVf9gMI/AAAAAAAAAB0/hjZsC7eE2cI/s400/pulitzers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5256719176377925826" />

This photo is the "Pulitzer prize" winning photo taken in 1994 during the Soudan famine. The picture depicts a famine stricken child towards an United Nation food camp, located a kilometer away.

The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it.
